Abstract

This paper discusses an approach to study the mechanical properties of the bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) by using a simple method called split-and-contact method (SCM). A method using BLM are known as a powerful tool for the ion channel analysis or membrane protein study. Here, we prepared micro split-and-contact device (Micro SCD) as a tool to study the mechanical vibration of the bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) in miniaturized system. A vibration was applied to the artificial bilayer lipid membranes (BLMs) that was formed at the restraint slit film hole after two aqueous droplets coated with lipid monolayers were brought into contact by using Micro-SCD. The percentage of the BLMs that was stayed intact after the vibration was determined for every restraint slit film hole size.
