Abstract

Additive manufacturing (AM), also commonly known as 3D printing, is a group of emerging techniques that can produce functional parts directly, including those that do not require assembly or with complex geometries, through the addition of materials layer by layer. This chapter introduces the AM process chain, divided into the digital, manufacturing, and post-process phases. The next section describes the seven main categories of AM techniques, namely, binder jetting (BJT), directed energy deposition (DED), material extrusion (MEX), material jetting (MJT), powder bed fusion (PBF), sheet lamination (SHL) and vat photopolymerization (VPP). Lastly, current progress in AM is highlighted, including potential and challenges for the technology.
