Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to focus on the implications and the outlook that 3D printing — sometimes referred to as additive manufacturing (AM) — presents as a technology that can be used in the context of rapid prototyping. Over six months, a group of IC analysts and private sector personnel researched this topic and took part in two workshops with presenters from academia, 3D printer manufacturing companies, government laboratory researchers and industry experts. Our analysis covers the perceptions, outlooks, and some possible controls to help understand this transformative technology as it continues to develop and expand.
