3D optical fiber technique for spatial flame analysis in internal combustion engines

Abstract

In order to meet the permanently growing demands on future combustion processes a continuous development of experimental measurement techniques is indispensable. The Institute for Reciprocating Engines of the Universitat Karlsruhe, Germany, developed a new calculation approach for the three-dimensional reconstruction of the flame propagation based on combustion images. The main motivation is to characterize the spatial location as well as the time dependent development of flames or irregular combustion phenomena by means of an advanced endoscopy technique.
