Abstract
A three-dimensional georadar survey has been conducted in a well-expased gravel pit in northeastern Switzerland in order to study the architecture of Quaternary glaciofluvial sediments. The gravel pit is located in front of the maximum Wurm-stage extension of the Rhine glacier and comprises proglacial fluvial gravel and sand. Typical braided-river structures can be seen in vertical bluffs of pit terrases. Due to the selective sorting of sediments by the fluviodynamic proceses, lithologic changes in glaciofluvial sediments may occur over short Bistances and depths. Sparse borehole data as well as two-dimensional geophysical data may be inadequate for resolving these changes.
