Abstract

A 3-D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model for cryocooler regenerators has been developed. The model was used to analyze an etched-foil regenerator. In the etched-foil regenerator, slots and channels are photoetched into the foil in precise patterns. The etched foil is then rolled upon itself to form a well defined three-dimensional, non-isotropic, porous structure having clean aerodynamic profiles. The regenerator flow resistance and heat transfer characteristics are analyzed by the three-dimensional, steady-state computational fluid dynamics model. Comparison between the model predictions and measured properties of an etched-foil regenerator is presented.
