Abstract
This article proposes a basic model of three topologies of transverse flux linear motors (TF-LMs), such as the electrically excited transverse flux linear motor (TFE-LM), the TFE-LM with permanent magnet (PM) screens (TFEMS-LM), and the magnetically excited transverse flux linear motor (TFM-LM). The thrust force and the normal force, and their corresponding densities, for the TFE-LM, TFEMS-LM, and TFM-LM are calculated by a three dimensional Finite Element Method (3D-FEM) software and compared to each other. All results confirm that the TFM-LM concept, especially, leads to a considerable increase of thrust force. In order to verify the results of 3D-FEM calculation, an experimental setup for stationary measurement of forces on a TFM-LM has been developed. The calculated forces and the measured forces are in good agreement. This result demonstrates that especially the TFM-LM could potentially reduce the mass of linear electrical motors.
