Abstract

Introduction: Despite bony healing and management options of facial injuries being well reported in the scientific literature, there is a lack of evidence-based guidance on appropriate return to contact sports following surgical repair of facial fractures. The aim of this research is to determine when professional athletes can safely return to contact sports, following open reduction and internal fixation of fractures of the facial skeleton based on our novel data. We use 3D digital imaging to develop guidelines to inform the athlete on appropriate return to full contact sporting activities.
