Abstract

In this study, the non-transferred DC argon plasma torch was modeled as three dimensional and tried to determine the position of the arc root attachment. Work has been carried out using commercial software “ANSYS FLUENT”. Modeling was done taking into account the influence of hydrodynamic and electromagnetic forces on the flow. The changes in arc length and arc root under these forces are examined. The effects of applied current and volumetric flow rate on the arc root were evaluated. As a result, it was seen that the arc root attachment moved by the balance between hydrodynamic and electromagnetic forces. As the increased magnetic forces shift the arc root to the torch input, the increased volumetric flow rate is observed to shift the arc root attachment towards the torch output. The results were compared with the literature.
