Abstract

Study Objectives: To examine the attitudes of MD and RN ED leaders in a major metropolitan area towards ambulance diversion and the first statewide diversion ban implemented in Massachusetts on 1/1/2009. Perceptions of the effects of the ban on patients, providers, and key relationships (hospital staff, hospitals, emergency medical services), as well as hospital preparations for the ban were explored. We hypothesized that ED leadership key informants (KIs) would provide unique insight into the implementation and effects of the diversion ban and that perspectives on the ban could be affected by factors such as hospital size, prior experience with diversion or professional role.
