Abstract

We report on the superior transistor performance of the vertical organic field‐effect transistor (V‐OFET), achieving up to 30x higher on‐currents than for reference horizontal organic thin film transistors (OTFTs) with 30 µm channel length and same organic semiconductor material. Furthermore, V‐OFETs show excellent on/off ratios (>106), good current saturation, and high operational stability. We describe the integration of V‐OFETs as drive transistors into flexible backplanes. We demonstrate flexible AMOLED display prototypes with 100 PPI resolution and 4 inch diagonal size fabricated on low‐cost plastic substrates. This novel backplane technology based on organic materials shows promise to greatly enhance the flexibility of future AMOLED displays.
