Abstract

The forces acting on and the flow patterns around two tandem circular cylinders submerged in oscillatory flow were studied by experiments. The hydraulic force coefficients of a single cylinder in oscillatory flow had been studied by many researchers. However a few data of a force coefficients of two circular cylinders in oscillatory flow had been obtained. So, the force coefficients of a single circular cylinder were measured in a U-tube water tank and compared with those of other studies to verify the experimental set-up. Two circular cylinders were arranged in the in-line direction in a water tank. When the gap of two cylinders is wide, the coefficients of in-line force and drag force of two cylinders approach the coefficients of a single cylinder, while the interia coefficients of two cylinders differ from those of a single cylinder. Predominant frequency of transverse force of two cylinders increases stepwise by increasing the KC number, as the same as the results of a single cylinder.
