Abstract

fMRI has been used to map language and memory function in surgical planning. Several fMRI studies encompassing over 300 patients demonstrate excellent agreement with invasive tests of language laterality (Wada test) and location (electro cortical stimulation). Several language paradigms are commonly used: those that stress expressive language – verbal or semantic fluency, semantic or phonemic decision – identify Broca’s area. Those that stress receptive aspects of language identify Wernicke’s area.
