Abstract
Determination of estradiol-17beta and progesterone by radioimmunoassay as well as studies with tritiated sex steroids show that these substances are secreted into the genital fluids (Beck et al.). Further investigations demonstrated that sex steroids were bound to sperms (Ericsson et al.). Staples et al. reported an increased proportion of male calves following insemination with estrogen- and progesterone-treated bovine bull semen. In the light of these observations we studied the influence of different sex steroids on the selective migration rate of male and female sperms in vitro. The migration of human sperms in periovulatory cervical mucus has been determined after incubation with sex steroids. Difference of male and female sperms in the migration capillary tubes was estimated microscopically following fluorescence staining by quinacrine-mustard (Caspersson and Zech). Our results provide evidence for an influence of sex steroids on the sex ratio in men too.(FULL TEXT)
