Abstract

Penn State has recently completed the design and feasibility testing of a pulsatile pediatric Ventricular Assist Device (VAD) under the 5 year NHLBI contract program “Pediatric Circulatory Support”. The Infant VAD is a pneumatically-actuated pulsatile pump with a 14 ml stroke volume, based on the adult Thoratec (Pierce-Donachy) VAD. The Pediatric VAD may provide left, right, or biventricular support for long term bridge-to-transplant or weaning applications. The primary design objective has been to minimize thromboembolic risk; thrombogenicity has been assessed in 30 day chronic animal studies.
