Abstract

Oral tablets of 20 mg norethandrolone (17-alpha-ethyl-17-hydroxy-19nor-4-androsten-3-one) were administered daily to four normal men for three months in an attempt to produce azospermia. Simultaneously with the start of this therapy, polysiloxane cylinders containing testosterone were inserted subdermally to maintain normal serum testosterone levels. This treatment regimen failed to cause adequate suppression of the sperm count although there was a reduction in circulating testosterone and dihydrotestosterone. Therefore, the dose of norethandrolone utilized in this study was not sufficient to be utilized as a male contraceptive pill. Testosterone administered by subdermal implants failed to maintain the pretreatment androgen levels.
