Abstract

Scars are visible marks due to skin injury, burn, inflammatory dermatosis or surgical procedures. Some scars are extensive, sometimes dystrophic and are considered embarrassing. Some induce regular itching or a feeling of tightness or pain. An international evaluation of the prevalence of scars has never been performed. This was an epidemiologic study on the prevalence, origin, location and side effects of scars, with 11,100 individuals selected in 5 countries (China, Brazil, Russia, France, and the United States).
