Abstract

Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, inflammatory skin condition of the follicular epithelium that impacts 1-4% of the population. While the pathophysiology of HS is not entirely understood, current understanding suggests an abnormality of the follicular epithelium leads to follicular rupture, with subsequent intradermal release of keratin, sebum and bacteria triggering the inflammatory response. Thus, while antibiotics may have anti-inflammatory as well as antimicrobial effects, targeted antibiotic therapy may improve patient outcomes in this difficult-to-manage condition.
