It is a generally safe epicutaneous test performed by application of individual allergens in an attempt to identify an offending ingredient. Patch testing is an impactful diagnostic tool for allergic contact dermatitis; However, the outcome may be inconclusive at times. Various determinant factors that influence patch test result includes: identification of all potential allergens in the home and work environment for testing, technical accuracy of patch application, and avoidance of immunosuppressive topical therapies at the test site as well as systemic therapies during testing.
