Abstract

Autoimmune blistering diseases encompass a wide variety of conditions affecting the skin and mucous membranes. These diseases are often divided into pemphigus or pemphigoid groups, based on immunopathologic differences in autoantibodies and their targets. In both groups an imbalanced T helper cell (Th) response plays a dominant role in producing cytokines and chemokines responsible for propagating disease. Given the autoimmune nature, treatment for both groups is aimed at immunosuppression or modulation.
