Abstract

This chapter primarily deals with solar energy production, including heating, cooling, power, and fuels production in addition to the conversion of solar energy into biochemical energy and photonic energy. It also discusses the importance of solar energy and maximum efficiencies that could be obtained from solar energy by applying thermodynamic first and second laws. The importance of exergy maps is also highlighted. Furthermore, the environmental impact of using solar energy along with an economic assessment of solar energy production is provided. Moreover, two case studies are incorporated to highlight the importance of applying multigeneration concept when exploiting solar energy.
