Abstract

Purpose of Study: To investigate the difference in length of stay (LOS) and cost among children’s hospitals and non-children’s hospitals when caring for neonates with hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE). Since the establishment of therapeutic hypothermia (TH) as standard care for neonatal HIE, LOS and cost for management of neonatal HIE has not been thoroughly investigated. Methods Used: Neonates diagnosed with HIE, defined by ICD-9-CM codes, were extracted from the 2012 national Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP) Kids’ Inpatient Database (KID).
