Abstract

Excellent night‐time visibility of electronic displays can be achieved by incorporation of a retroreflective element to allow efficient return of incident light from car headlamps, IR camera systems etc. However, such displays have a poor daytime appearance since diffuse reflectivity is required to make best use of ambient light. In this paper we present a novel optical configuration for reflective liquid crystal displays, which can achieve both these reflectivity conditions simultaneously.
