Abstract
This chapter focuses on “programmed visits” to industry. Fundamentally a programmed visit is a lesson taught on industrial or commercial premises. The content of the lesson must be an integral part of the school curriculum with the subject matter chosen from an examination syllabus, whether devised internally by the school, or as part of a nationally accepted syllabus for an external examination. The objectives of these visits are: (1) to indicate the relevance of subject material taught in schools to commerce, technology and industry; (2) to enable students to obtain a clear picture of industrial life with its opportunities and challenges. A programmed visit aims to enable a teacher to begin the study of a subject in the classroom, continue and reinforce this subject by a visit, and complete the work by further classroom discussion. If the objectives of the programmed visit are to be achieved, a good deal of forward planning is essential, with work done by people on both sides of the link.
