Abstract

From 1989 to 1993, 34 patients with penetrating abdominal gunshot and stab wounds underwent surgical therapy. Six patients had gunshot wounds, and 28 patients stab wounds. Laparotomy was performed in all cases of gunshot wound of the abdomen. In cases of stab wound, indication for laparotomy was dependent on the type of injury, clinical aspect and essentially on the result of ultrasound. In eight cases (nearly 30%) negative laparotomy was performed. We tried to examine whether surgical treatment could have been avoided in those cases.
