Abstract

Placement of a Jackson-Pratt (JP) drain during penile prosthesis implantation is a common technique to minimize post-operative hematoma and swelling. For admitted patients, JP drains are routinely removed prior to discharge. More frequently, penile prostheses are being implanted on an outpatient basis, requiring the patients to come back to the office for removal of the JP drain. Patients often have significant discomfort following their surgery and returning to the office may present logistical challenges. To determine if patients can safely and comfortably remove the JP drain at home following outpatient penile prosthesis implantation. Retrospective review of a single surgeon case series of 51 consecutive patients undergoing implantation of a multicomponent penile prosthesis was conducted over a 12-month period from 2018 to 2019. All cases were performed through a penoscrotal incision with a 7-French flat JP drain positioned adjacent to the corporotomies with a right upper hemiscrotum exit site.
