Abstract

Throughout the life course of a woman there is a dynamic change in emphasis of various aspects of sexuality. This affects the longing for a meaningful relationship. Alteration in body image, reduced libido, nerve damage due to surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy may result in a changed perception of self with changes in self-esteem. This in turn may affect sexual activity. Sexuality does not consist only of physical intimacy, but includes emotional needs and intimate feelings. In our modern society we have a high valuation of health to such an extent that we are unable to accept suffering as an integral part of human life.
