Abstract
This chapter discusses the fruit Persimmon . The three significant species of the genus Diospyros ( Ebenaceae ) for fruit are D. virginiana Linnaeus, the American persimmon; D. lotus Linnaeus, the Chinese persimmon; D. kaki Linnaeus, the Japanese persimmon, oriental persimmon, or kaki; and D. kaki being commercially the most important species. The following species of soft scales are considered to be of economic importance: Ceroplastes japonicus Green (China, Italy), C. pseudoceriferus Green (Korea), Coccus hesperidum Linnaeus (Australia), and Parthenolecanium persicae (Fabricius) (Israel). Direct damage is caused by nutrient removal and indirect damage because of sooty molds that develop on the honeydew. Because P. persicae does not develop during the summer, the amounts of honeydew and sooty mould during this season are negligible or small.
