Abstract

Background: Pre and post-treatment staging of anal cancer is often inaccurate. The role of PET/CT in anal cancer is yet to be defined. The 2007 National Comprehensive Cancer Network treatment guidelines included PET/CT as a part of the standard pre-treatment workup of patients diagnosed with anal carcinoma. The new version 2.2011 consider PET-CT scan for work up, even if its use for staging or treatment planning has not been validated. These Authors suggest that PET-CT actually does not replace a diagnostic CT scan.
