Abstract

Background: ODISSeA - Organ Donation Innovative Strategies for Southeast Asia is an Erasmus+ project funded by the European Commission, with the aim to design & implement an academic postgraduate program on organ donation (OD) in 8 Southeast Asian (SeA) universities from Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines & Thailand and 3 universities from European Union (EU). Asia has the lowest rate of organ transplantation and highest growth rate of people entering chronic & end-stage organ failure. The gaps in the SeA region highlight the need for a solid framework for deceased organ donation alongside improved legislation, healthcare reform & education. Methods: In the first phase, a diagnosis analysis is conducted through questionnaires to target groups (university personnel, faculty & potential postgraduate students) to assess existing training programs in OD, digital literacy & access, awareness & attitude towards OD. 7 responses were gathered from university personnel, 26 from faculty members and 76 from potential students. The second phase consists on a Train the Trainers blended program (online & face to face) to future SeA trainers. SeA & EU experts will develop and implement the postgraduate program (35 participants per institution). The program employs blended methodology (online training, local & international seminars, informative events, on-the-job projects). Pre- & post-training questionnaires, self-assessing activities will be used to evaluate students. Results: The Kick-off meeting took place in Davao (Philippines) in March 2019. 32 representatives from the ODISSeA Consortium attended the meeting. The evaluation of the meeting reached 4,36 out of 5. The Train the Trainers program enrolled 30 professionals involved in ICU, ER, Anesthesiology, Neurosciences, Nephrology and Surgery. The postgraduate program, based on previously trained faculty members, will provide a common framework for 8 SeA Universities to develop a student-centered lifelong learning strategy corresponding to highly specialized knowledge in OD, in accordance with the European Space for Higher Education guidelines. postgraduate program will target 280 students from the 8 SEA universities. We expect significant changes in the performance assessment and qualitative analysis in terms of competence transfer & impact, from learning to clinical practice. Conclusions: ODISSeA is an innovative initiative to establish recognized academic training in OD in 8 SeA universities. Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines and Thailand will be the first SeA to offer a HE formal training in the field of organ donation.
