Abstract

The widespread impact of power blackouts in both North America and Europe in recent years has heightened interest in strategies and solutions that can enhance the reliability and security of electric power supply. Distributed small scale (<30 MW) power generation equipment, including energy-efficient combined heat and power (CHP) systems, renewable energy-fueled gas turbines and gas turbine mobile power units, installed strategically around the power grid are an important emerging option for the transmission and distribution planner. This paper discusses the range of 3-30 MW power generation solutions available today, with emphasis on their economical application to enhance grid reliability and security
