Abstract

After the closure of a regional safety-net hospital our emergency department (ED) noted a 20% increase in patient volumes and associated prolonged wait times. To mitigate this problem, we designed a self-check-in (SCI) process, utilizing a kiosk to bypass traditional nursing check in. SCI has been associated with reduced ED wait times. In September 2019, we implemented a tablet-based SCI kiosk utilizing our vendor-based EHR’s (Epic Systems, Verona, WI) “Welcome” module in our emergency department.
