Abstract

Hospital chargemasters list standard prices for various procedures and medications. In 2019, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services required hospitals to publicize their chargemasters to increase price transparency but provided only minimal guidance on formatting and standardization. Chargemasters list gross prices independent of patients’ insurance coverage, and therefore rarely reflect expenses for insured patients. Herein, we evaluated chargemasters from the five largest hospitals in each state to determine their utility as potential decision-making tools for uninsured and self-pay patients.
