Abstract

One of the causes of railway vehicles' flange climb derailment in sharp curves is considered as friction between wheel and rail increasing under repeated rolling contact condition. In some sections of track, rails which brass is welded on are used for decreasing shunting resistance of track circuit. Using this sort of rails with brass, we evaluated friction coefficient between brass and wheel by the Creep Tester, which is a device to evaluate tangential forces under rolling contact conditions. As a result, friction coefficient of brass is lower than that of carbon steel under repeated rolling conditions. In general, low friction coefficients between low rails and wheels in curves decrease the derailment quotient on high rails. Therefore, rails with brass installed as low rails in curves have a possibility of being a measure against flange climb derailment.
