Abstract

Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the spectrometer comparison. The chapter makes a comparative study of the design considerations for photo-peak spectrometers, anti-Compton spectrometers and Compton spectrometers, using equal size Ge-Li-drifted primary detectors. The basic equipment involved for all these spectrometers is shown and the response functions and efficiencies are determined. Nuclear particle research has been greatly enhanced since the semi-conductor detectors have been in use, but in γ spectroscopy in particular entirely new possibilities were found. Semiconductor detectors showed almost immediately at their introduction that resolutions could be increased by an order of magnitude or better. The photo-peak spectrometer uses the full energy peaks of y rays for spectrum analysis. Ge(-Li) detectors are used in a photo-peak spectrometer rather than Si(-Li) detectors. The anti-Compton spectrometer, like the photo-peak spectrometer, uses the full energy peak for spectrum analysis.
