Abstract

A 31 P NMR study of powder and single-crystal samples of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP), NH 4 H 2 -PO 4 , was undertaken in order to resolve the apparent discrepancies in the literature concerning the local symmetry at the phosphorus nucleus of the H 2 PO 4 moiety. In two independent 31 P NMR studies of solid dihydrogen phosphates, evidence has been presented which indicates that the phosphorus chemical shift tensor of ADP is nonaxially symmetric, in contrast to expectations based on the accepted crystal structure from X-ray and neutron diffraction experiments
