Abstract

Background: Approximately 30% of patients radically operated on for colorectal cancer, with an expectedly favourable prognosis suffer recurrence. There is interest to find potential impact of perioperative factors on long-term outcome after surgery. Micrometastasis can be present at the moment of the surgery but not actively developing. This non-replicative state is indicated as 'tumor dormancy'. Cancer development is strictly controlled by the hostÕs immune system. Severe sepsis impaires effective antitumor responses and protracted immunosuppression in post septic patients may last for years.
