Abstract
It has long been established that some genes impact the development and function of multiple organ systems simultaneously (referred to as “pleiotropy”). Consequently, genetic testing for any indication may have implications with respect to a child’s future developmental trajectory. There are numerous clinical examples whereby genetic investigations motivated by a congenital cardiac malformation, by hypotonia, or by cleft lip/palate subsequently identify genetic variants associated with substantially increased rates of ASD, intellectual disability, or adult-onset psychotic disorders.
