Abstract

In addition to the 2.7 million (7.6%) Canadians in 2010 known to have diabetes an additional 1 million Canadians are suspected to have undiagnosed diabetes. Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, patients admitted with ACS and diabetes (both diagnosed and undiagnosed) are known to have higher short and long term mortality rates. Unfortunately, varying estimates have been reported as to the prevalence of undiagnosed diabetes among cohorts of patients with true ACS (ST elevation myocardial infarction (MI), non ST elevation MI and unstable angina).
