Abstract

Abdominal access by laparoscopic surgery carries a risk of visceral injury. Bleeding, subcutaneous emphysema, gastro-intestinal perforation, major and minor vascular injury are potential complications associated with abdominal access and the creation of pneumoperitoneum. Between October 2003 and September 2005, we experienced gastrointestinal perforation (three), subcutaneous hematoma (one), renal capsular hematoma (one) and subcutaneous emphysema (three) either by direct trocar insert or blind Veress needle insert.
