Abstract

TI 5d photoelectron spectra of TI and TII are compared. It is observed that the multiline character of atomic 5d 3 2 subshell ionization disappears in the molecular case. This disappearance is attributed to the transfer of the 6p 1 2 electron to iodine when the molecule is formed. The transfer of the 6p 1 2 electron inhibits a two-electron (one-electron-down-one-electron-up) configuration interaction mechanism operative for the atom which is responsible for the multiline character of the atomic spectrum.
