Abstract

Bronchiolitis obliterans (BO) limits the long-term benefits of lung transplantation (LTX). BO is characterized by progressive fibrosis and obliteration of airways with airflow limitation; however, its pathogenesis remains unclear. Lung resident mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are multipotent cell progenitors populating the adult lung. MSCs can be isolated from bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) obtained from lung grafts; however, their significance in BO is unknown.
