Abstract

LONDON-- The 300-year-old Royal Greenwich Observatory (RGO) in Cambridge, one of Britain9s oldest scientific institutions and which provides technical and scientific support for Britain9s astronomers, will close in October as part of cost-cutting measures by the Particle Physics and Astronomy Research Council. After reviews of Britain9s home-based astronomy facilities over 15 years, RGO finally lost out last year in a contest with the Royal Observatory Edinburgh to become Britain9s single Astronomy Technology Centre, serving telescopes in the Canary Islands and Hawaii. The RGO name will return to its original observatory site in Greenwich, southeast London, which is now a museum.
