Abstract

The Restionaceae are taxonomically close to the Poaceae, and are herbaceous plants mostly distributed in the Southern Hemisphere. We report here the identification of fossil pollen attributed to the genus Restio, and resem- bling Restio mahonii (N.E.Br.) Pillans. The pollen was found in two highland peat bogs from Rwanda and Burun- di, and dates from 30,000 yr BP. The fossil pollen grains are abundant, and are associated with other swamp compo- nents, such as Sphagnum. These results show that there was
