Abstract

During 2012, key meetings were the eighth meeting of the Open-Ended Working Group (OEWG) and the ninth meeting of the compliance committee. The convention now has 180 parties, with Brunei Darussalam and Zimbabwe becoming bound in 2012. The Ban Amendment gained a seventy-fourth ratification in 2012 with Lesotho. There were no ratifications or acceptance of the 1999 Basel Protocol on Liability and Compensation for Damage Resulting from Transboundary Movements of Hazardous Wastes and Their Disposal (Basel Liability Protocol) in 2012, so by year’s end there remained ten ratifications (twenty needed for entry into force).
