Abstract

Little is written about the childhood of Jesus in the earliest surviving Christian writings, the letters of Paul, or in the earliest canonical gospel of Mark. The canonical evangelists, Matthew and Luke, both relate just a few events of Jesus' early life prior to his ministry. Believers through the centuries have been fascinated by these missing years. ‘The infancy gospels’ looks at what the non-canonical texts have to say about Jesus' early life. Despite the contested value of the historicity of the events these texts recorded, they should still be seen as invaluable documentation of the social and theological history of pious believers during the years following Jesus' life.
