Abstract

China’s digital library research and construction, although lagging behind the United States and other developed countries, is developing very fast. It has gone through phases of research, experiment, and practice. Since the early 1990s, papers introducing international digital libraries emerged in Chinese library science journals. According to Lynch’s theory, at least three types of systems or services can be considered a digital library. It is the same in China: research prototypes, extension from traditional libraries, and commercial systems. The investments are from national and local government as well as commercial enterprises. The relationship between digital and traditional libraries is also discussed in this chapter.
