Abstract
The idea of spirituality is often associated with experience, and this experience is often intense, perhaps felt in music, art, or sport. In theistic religions, explicitly mystical experience is often interpreted as contact with God. In non-theistic religions, it is focused more on a transformation of consciousness. Outside of religion, this sort of experience is present in practices such as yoga and meditation. The end result is the same: mindfulness, awareness of inner life, or inner healing. ‘Spirituality and experience’ examines the mystical experience in different religions, outlines the connection between spirituality and the arts, spirituality as experienced in nature pursuits, and how a spiritual experience may be invoked by contemporary scientific developments.
