Abstract

It is difficult to classify Foucault in political terms and he was quite proud of that. ‘Politics’ attempts to describe Foucault's politics. Foucault, like many of the other intellectuals of his generation, grew up under the shadow of Satre, whose politics had an influence. Satre's defining political experience was the Second World War and German occupation in France. Foucault was an adolescent during the war. His adulthood started during a time of political instability in post-war France. He criticised Satre's idea of ethical and political absolutes. His attitude to politics is best described as ambivalent, especially towards Marxism. He seemed reluctant to judge, as there can be no authority of judgement except by those directly involved in a situation.
