Abstract

‘Experts in court’ reviews the contributions that forensic psychologists make as expert witnesses. Expert evidence is given to assist the court in its decision, whether the expert agrees with that decision or not. The role that forensic psychologists play in court proceedings depends considerably on the particular jurisdiction and legal context in which they are operating and the legal questions they are asked to answer. All of their contributions utilize theories, methods, principles, and procedures that are unique to forensic psychologists and their clinical experiences. The limits of expert evidence and psychological assessment procedures, such as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, are discussed.
